    Re: Hunter Greene Part 2

Hunters current stats this year show him as about our 3rd or 4th best starter and that seems about right to the eye test too. Maybe someday he’ll turn the corner, but in the mean time he’s not a TOR pitcher, IMO. Way to inconsistent

That said, Greene isn’t going to pitch 210 innings and not give up any homers, so it’s obviously unrealistic to think he can put up that line every game. But if he can average 6 IP with a 3.50 FIP, he’d be a #1 starter in most people’s book.
The best thing by far about Greene's season so far is that he's only given up 2 HR in 27 innings pitched. If he can keep his HR/9 around 1.0 for the season (it's currently 0.7) he's going to have a great year.

From 2021-2023 221 starters had 25 starts in a season

    • Of the 221 135 (61%) had an ERA under 4.00
    • Of the 221 only 22 (10%) were under the age of 25
    • Of the 22 only nine of them had seasons with an ERA under 4.00

To refresh, of the 221 pitchers in the last three seasons only seven (4%) were under the age of 25 and had an ERA under 4.00

Hunter needs to be in that group is what I am hearing

On the day the Reds signed Hunter Greene to a contract extension -- I honestly believe some fans made up their mind that he would never be worth the money. Many of them comparing Hunter Greene to Homer Bailey.

I also believe that some of those fans are members here at RedsZone.

Just like Votto. One of the greatest hitters in Reds history and that wasn't enough for some people.

I made that comparison a couple pages ago, and while I would prefer he be a generational superstar, you could do worse than a peak of 3 years of 3.60 ERA baseball

Just sayin that I believe the same fans that held Homer's contract against him are doing the same thing with Hunter.

Hunter Greene flashes promise, brilliance again in Cincinnati Reds win over Texas Rangers
These are the days that tantalize, that promise, that make all those people around Hunter Greene keep preaching patience on all those other days that don't look like this one.

Because when he's right, when Greene pitches instead of hurls, like he did so well for so many innings Saturday against the defending-champion Rangers in Texas, he looks like a $53 million ace, and the Cincinnati Reds look like a team with players that can win playoff games.

Whether it was a difference in the radar readings at Globe Life Field in Texas or intent on Greene's part, he didn't hit triple digits with any of his 98 pitches in Saturday's 8-4 win.

Humming comfortably in the upper 90s with his fastball and inducing a lot more contact than usual, almost all of it for relatively quick outs – throwing more than 14 pitches in an inning only once all day.

Hunter’s baseball card numbers look the same this year. But his under the hood numbers look so much better. There’s more to come from him this year.
"Today was the byproduct of us thinking we can come back from anything." - Joey Votto after blowing a 10-1 lead and holding on for the 12-11 win on 8/25/2010.

    Hunter Greene's fun with numbers:

    - Greene's fWAR ranks tied for 5th in all of MLB, with 1.1.
    - His fastball run value is in the 98th percentile.
    - His xERA is in the 88th percentile.
    - His xBA is .180 and in the 93rd percentile.
    - His average exit velocity is in the 66th percentile.
    - His barrel percentage is in the 73rd percentile.
    - His hard hit percentage is in the 67th percentile.

In short, Hunter Greene, while extremely unlucky, has pitched like a TOR starter so far this season.
